ABOUT THIS MASTER CLASS
Course materials are presented, using a combination of didactic teaching, case studies, and question time. Each day is a stand-alone workshop, and participants may choose to choose either one or both workshops.

DAY ONE
Participants will learn how to conduct a diagnostic assessment for an adult or older adolescent with autism, including measurement of comorbidity, differential diagnosis, and use of psychometric assessment.

DAY TWO
Participants will learn common presentations and challenges that adults with autism face, reasons for the challenges and strategies to accommodate the characteristics of autism. Emotion management, relationship development, workplace issues, substance use, forensic issues, personality disorders, sexuality, psychosis, and gender identity will be discussed.

Professionals who see adults and/or older adolescents with autism as part of their work, including psychologists, GPs, psychiatrists, employment agencies, social workers, counsellors, high school teachers, teachers assistants, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and staff in clinics for mental health problems, eating disorders, substance use issues, gender identity issues, and forensic issues.

About the speakers

Prof. Tony Attwood PhD is an internationally recognised clinical psychologist, educator, and author. Recently featured on ABC’s Australian Story, Tony is one of the world’s foremost authorities on autism. His book Asperger’s Syndrome: A Guide for Parents and Professionals is an international best seller and seminal in the field.

 

Dr Michelle Garnett PhD is a clinical psychologist who has specialised in autism for 27 years. In 2005 she founded Minds & Hearts, a now internationally recognised Clinic. Her research has informed understanding of early detection, the female profile and the importance of good mental health. She has co-authored five highly regarded books on autism. Her most recent book with Barb Cook is a seminal work on the female presentation,
Spectrum Women: Walking to the Beat of Autism.
