About This Course

Purpose

We created this course to increase professional and community awareness of autistic burnout, how to assess it and distinguish it from depression, and how to recover and stay well.

Description

An autistic life is not an easy life. There is the potential for great stress and chronic exhaustion from trying to cope with social and sensory experiences, being misunderstood and criticized, high levels of anxiety and, for many reasons, not feeling in touch with or able to be the authentic self. In addition, there may be self-imposed expectations that are greater than coping mechanisms and abilities. Subsequent stress can build up over time that can lead to autistic burnout, which is characterised by increased social withdrawal, a form of 'hibernation' and reduced executive functioning, the frontal lobes are 'closed' awaiting recovery.

This course will cover the causes and signs of autistic burnout and how autistic burnout is conceptually different to depression. We focus on the current best-known strategies for recovery and what to do to re-design life after autistic burnout to prevent another burnout.

Hi Tony and Michelle, thank you so much for the presentation. I'm just starting my discovery journey and really appreciated the in depth crash course on something I've felt challenging my entire life. After learning more, I hope to be able to unmask more and avoid burnout!

Thank you so much. I could listen to both of you for hours. You provide so much valuable information.

I just love your manner and compassion when presenting. This is an area which needs so much of this driving its research and practice.

All the topics were presented in an easy-to-follow manner. Very interesting and clear. Clearly, Tony and Michelle have great knowledge and can transport all the information very well.

This event was my 4th webinar. I love the content and delivery; it keeps us engaged and delivering relevant info, and I can’t wait for the next webinar.
