About This Course

Purpose

The purpose of the presentation is to deepen the participant’s knowledge and strategies for supporting a person with PDA at home, school, work and in therapy, across the lifespan. The course assumes knowledge from our introductory course, PDA and Autism – An Introduction.

Purpose
Description

The term PDA was first coined by Elizabeth Newson, a developmental psychologist, in the 1980s in the UK. She described PDA as being extremely high anxiety driven by the need to control and avoid other people’s demands and expectations. A distinguishing feature of individuals with PDA is that many of the communication, teaching, parenting, and supportive strategies created for non-autistic and autistic individuals do not work, but strategies based on a thorough understanding of PDA can be effective. The purpose of this webcast is to increase the participant’s understanding and skill to support people who have PDA across the lifespan. The programme assumes knowledge of our introductory course, PDA and Autism – An Introduction, and goes further to describe our current conceptualisation of PDA, including how it relates to autism, and strategies for home, school, work, and therapy in more depth.

Testimonials

What our attendees have said...

I am feeling so much positivity for my clients after your heartwarming and informed seminar.

Loved every minute. You presented so well and all the information is amazing. Can’t thank you enough. From Meg, mother and educator of a PDAer.

Thank you very much for making this event so comprehensive, deep and enjoyable.

Thank you for such a direct and concise presentation. You really consider concerns from all aspects/family dynamics and I love your direct, informative approach. I think it is really valuable that you address questions in a separate presentation. This allows for good processing and not getting sidetracked.

Absolutely loved it. Lightbulb for me was 1-3 ranking! The only thing I would recommend is a longer timeframe it felt like you were both working very hard to get all the info covered in such a short timeframe. A million thanks for sharing your immense wealth of knowledge. Your training helps me be the best therapist I can be and this flows onto my amazing clients and families.

Another excellent and informative presentation from leaders in our practice. These trainings are invaluable. I often talk to autistic individuals that I work with about 'glimmers' and those things that give great joy. Getting to do one of your webinars is a glimmer for me! The information is like a gift I can give to others to empower them. Thank you.
