About This Course

Purpose

We created this course to assist participants to achieve greater knowledge and confidence in understanding and supporting Autistic individuals who are struggling with anorexia nervosa to maximise the best outcomes.

Description

We know from research that approximately 30% of individuals with anorexia nervosa are autistic. In the past autism was not necessarily recognised or accommodated in the treatment of anorexia, potentially negatively affecting the outcome of treatment. Some studies have indicated poorer outcomes in treatment for autistic individuals who have an eating disorder. Fortunately, there is now far more research, guidance, and understanding for parents and professionals working in this complex area.

The course is presented by Tony Michelle and Asher Jenner. Tony and Michelle draw on their combined experience of over 80 years of clinical experience, the current research, and Michelle has lived experience as an autistic person. Asher Jenner is autistic with a PDA profile and has recovered from anorexia nervosa. From this base, Tony, Michelle and Asher provide ideas and strategies to modify existing effective treatments for anorexia nervosa to be successful for autistic individuals.

In addition to the 3.5-hour webinar, the presenters will create a 45-minute recording of Q&A based on questions received during the webinar. Each participant will receive a link to the additional resource within 1 month after the webinar.

Testimonials

What our attendees have said...

Thank you so very much! Such a incredible and valuable webinar, extremely applicable to my work.

Being an autistic adult 61yo female with an eating disorder, I found it validating.  Thank you both.

Thank you very much. So grateful for great slides and recording that I can go back to for reference. Loved how you encouraged families to be aware of issues that might start early, rather than waiting til ED is severe.

Thank you for the highly informative session. It has made me view my daughter's recovery from AN from a different perspective and has reinforced the need to ensure that her army of support consider her Autism in her therapy.

This was a fabulous workshop. I am a dietitian who has worked in this area of clinical practice for a few years and found this affirming for my practice. I enjoy learning more & more about these really interesting clients. Thank you!

Thank you! It was wonderful. I am a Speech Pathologist working in a paediatric feeding clinic. I have lots of experience but absolutely learnt so much. Wonderful!

Asher Jenner

Asher Jenner is 19 years old and autistic with a PDA profile. We met Asher as a co-presenter at a conference on PDA. We were so impressed with her story, insights and eloquence in delivery, we asked her to record her presentation to be part of this webinar. We are proud and delighted to be able to present Asher’s lived experience to enrich your learning.

Asher shares her journey on how a lack of understanding of autism and in particular, the PDA profile, led to mental health issues including anorexia nervosa, but how neuroaffirming support aided her recovery. She has fully recovered from anorexia nervosa and is currently studying in England where she lives.
