About This Course

Purpose

This mini-course was designed to assist parents and carer to understand and manage the emotional, physical, and social stressors associated with parenting and/or caring for an autistic person to prevent or manage carer burnout.

Purpose
Description

Parenting and/or caring for an autistic person with significant support needs can lead to stress, emotional strain, and carer burnout. Stress levels typically exceed those of parents and carers of non-autistic people. In this course, we highlight sources of stress, including meltdowns and shutdowns, mental health challenges, not enough practical and emotional support, physical and emotional exhaustion, personal sacrifices, accommodating the autistic person’s sensory sensitivity, social abilities and need for routines and having to navigate the various support agencies and community stigma. We outline the signs of carer burnout and, importantly, share strategies for preventing and managing burnout, self-care and creating an effective support network.

Special Note re Q&A

Our mini-courses do not include a dedicated Q&A section during the live webcast. However, if you submit your question/s at least 24 hours prior to the webcast via the chat room located in your course in our learning platform, Michelle and Tony will do their very best to answer your question as part of the presentation information. Please note, not all questions will be able to be answered, as is always the case with our courses.
