About This Course

Purpose

The course was designed to assist neurodivergent students to maximise their capacity for academic success and for their lecturers and tutors. Deeply neuroaffirming, we explain the strengths and challenges neurodivergent students commonly experience within a tertiary setting and strategies for themselves and the academic staff who teach them.

Description

Autistic students may need specific support in tertiary settings. Initially, support may include deciding which courses to take, the university or college location, part-time or full-time study and settling into a new life.  We discuss types of supports that may be helpful for neurodivergent students and how to access support. with recommendations based on clinical experience, the research literature and lived experience.

Specific topics include managing executive functioning challenges, anxiety, mood and stress management, communication strategies for academic staff, and creating a social life.

Academic and student-support staff will greatly benefit from understanding student life from an Autistic perspective and neuroaffirming ways to teach neurodivergent students.
